What is V2I and V2V?

In Ohio, Honda are attempting to reduce the amount of road accidents by creating smart technology in cars. This involves the communications of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I).

One of Honda’s main areas of focus is it’s smart intersections, they found that 20% of road accidents happen at intersections and hope to save hundreds of lives a year by connecting cars to in infrastructure around them.

V2V technology allows vehicles to ‘communicate’ or ‘talk’ with eachother, the aim of it is to improve road safety by passing information between drivers so that they can be more aware of what’s happening around them as well as be more alert in the case of an emergency/situation.

Honda uses wireless communications to send information from vehicle-to-vehicle about their speed, location and direction. 

The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) says communication between vehicles could address 79% of all potential vehicle crashes on the American highway.

“Although the safety benefit of incorporating V2V DSRC technology can be significant, when most people are buying a car they don’t do so thinking they will have an accident. Therefore short-range collision avoidance may not be that tempting a prospect.”

Vehicle to infrastructure communication is the technology that would allow cars to read:

  • Traffic Lights 
  • Road Signs 
  • Built Infrastructure Systems

As self-driving vehicles are becoming a reality, this could be a crucial big step to preventing road collisions, both driven by people and autonomously.

And driverless cars could be here as early as 2021! 



The new smart systems aim to reduce collisions which cause injuries, once the technology is safer and reliable we should see a massive decline in driving related accidents. 


Smart vehicles would be able to detect an approaching vehicle and alert the driver entering the intersection, this would result in quicker reactions from the driver and help to prevent accidents. 

Money Savings:

By reducing the amount of collisions and scrapes, less people will be spending their money on repairing their vehicle. Also, by recognising a traffic jam before you reach it, you can divert to avoid wasting fuel by waiting and in result spend less money on fuel.
